The classic “Brosnan” Omega SMP 300.

And why I am shaken and stirred every time i wear it.

Argh…… the famous or maybe infamous Omega Seamaster 300m reference 253.80.00 .A lot has been written about this watch since it blasted onto our screens in the 1997 James Bond blockbuster Tomorrow Never Dies. This was Omega’s 2nd mission for 007 and the first one for the Automatic model ( the quartz 2541.80.00 was their debut into MI6, in 1995’s Goldeneye……

and is the cheaper option if you want to get into Bond Omega’s). this was all before it became commercialised. I am sure you all remember the famous train scene in Casino Royale where Vesper asks Bond “Rolex?” only to be told that it was an Omega he was wearing. one of the reasons this affiliation came about was the costume designer Lindy Hemming who recognised the SBS history of the Bond character and their association with the Omega Seamaster,

Back in the old Brosnan days Q Branch were involved with fixing up 007’s watches with gadgets such as laser cutter or a remote detonator, but when Daniel Craig took centre stage ( as the best and most realistic Bond) the gadgets had gone to Bonds slight disapproval.

I bought my 2004 Automatic in March 2022 (and not just because it was a “Bond” watch I hasten to add) I was super cautious and aware that the old style bracelet was prone to wear and could fall to pieces so I bought a freshly serviced one for £3,345 from a reputable dealer in south Manchester. this service included the bracelet but annoyingly the faded bezel was replaced and the old one was not returned by Omega.I have been a bond fan since the 1970’s and think it was this Bond/Omega partnership that rekindled my passion for watches again. The design of the SMP is timeless, in the 2024 model the movement and bracelet may of been updated and different coloured dial options are offered but essentially the watch is the same as it always was. it could almost be a “one and done” (if that is existed in a watch collectors world). The watch is a total “strap Monster” and looks fab on rubber leather or a NATO. It works with a suit in the boardroom and is equally at home by the pool.It is Chronometer certified so keeps time with the best of em’ (- 4/+6 seconds per day) The case is 41 mm with a lug width of 20 mm the thickness is 12mm. for those undertaking a mission in the deep end of local swimming baths then you will be pleased to know the WR is 300 meters. If I have one criticism it is that the bezel is difficult to turn.

The Omega / 007 partnership continues to this day and their last offering is probably my favourite ….the NTTD .. This brilliant chunk of titanium is available with a superb mesh bracelet ( also made of titanium) or a NATO strap with colours that match the dial .

They cheekily got away with adding the official MOD “pheon” arrow above the 6.00 o’clock position which is a bit naughty as the watch is about as much Government property as my kettle. .so back to the subject of this article .. my glorious 2004 SMP 300.It is one of my favorite pieces I own and when I eventually start culling the collection this will not be included. for those looking to own one of these fantastic iconic timepieces then i would budget for at least £3200 / $4000 for a fully serviced model with box and papers ( possibly more) as mentioned earlier the quartz version 2541.80.00 can be had for £1000 /$1200 cheaper. but….. be quick as vintage pieces like this don’t get any cheaper.
